In evolutionary astrology we think of the signs of the zodiac in evolutionary terms. Signs animate a planet and give it a psychological agenda. These agendas can express themselves on a spectrum from their shadowy lows to their more enlightened highs, and everything in between. This is one example of free will. In this way, we are free, creative beings, acting out our charts in ways that are unpredictable to the astrologer. But, the energy in your birth chart has to go somewhere. So, if your sun is in the sign of Virgo, for example, your self (sun) will be motivated by psychological agendas of Virgo. This is one thing astrologers can predict.
If you’re carrying lots of Virgo energy within your psyche, (you may have your sun in Virgo, your moon in Virgo, your ascendent in Virgo, or perhaps your north node in Virgo) we could say that in this lifetime, you are attending Virgo school. You’re learning lots of Virgo lessons, and you’re learning how to walk the high road of this Virgo-inspired path.
So, what might that high road look like?
First off, you were born with an innate talent for discernment. You have the ability to see an ideal, and compare this ideal with what actually is. The ideal, versus the reality. Thus, you are on a path of lifelong self-improvement, with an urge to grow and get closer and closer to this ideal which you can see so clearly in your mind, along with everything that’s muddying up that clarity in the here and now. With such a strong drive to self improve, there’s often the more annoying expressions of fussiness, nitpicking, and criticism, directed towards others, and more often towards yourself.
Because of this core need to improve one’s self or situation in life, a core Virgo lesson you are constantly needing to hold close to your heart is one of self-love and self-acceptance, in the present moment. As you strive to polish the diamond of your soul, you will need to carry in your pocket book all the tools needed for self- acceptance. With this much need for perfection, you’ve been born with all the necessary resources: self-discipline, reason, clarity, and practicality. Logging your ten thousand hours to perfect a skill of your choosing will help you on this lifelong journey of self-acceptance and ultimately a true and whole love for yourself and your evolving soul journey.
One way of achieving this ultimate goal of self love and self-acceptance is to find something that you want to get really good at, to polish a skill that gives you a deep sense of self-worth, and which helps others. This is why Virgo is the sign of the craftsperson. That’s one archetype to describe Virgo. The Servant, another, but this just means that whatever craft you choose to perfect, you will want it to be something that ultimately serves others in some way. Finding this craft will give someone with a Virgo sun for example, an energy and vitality and sunny disposition to move through life with a sense of purpose and the drive to improve while loving oneself and accepting their place in the journey from one moment to the next.
We all have Virgo somewhere in our birth chart. Mine is on the Midheaven angle, or the beginning of my 10th house of career and reputation. If you're wondering where your Virgo energy resides, consider treating yourself to a Letter from the Cosmos. You'll find out how and where this energy is destined to play out in your life, and how you can best walk the high road of this Virgoan path.
Happy Virgo season!
